A drain-side leak is on the waste side — everything carrying water away. Those pipes are only wet when something is being used. A leak there appears after a shower and stops afterward, wastes almost no water, and is completely invisible to a meter test.
Same damp ceiling. Same stain. Entirely different search.
Which one you have is determined before anyone opens anything, and it's the difference between a targeted job and an expensive hunt.

Supply-side, pressurised. Constant. Doesn't care whether anyone is home. It shows on the meter, it appears on the bill, and it grows.
