A garbage disposal is the only appliance in your home sitting at the junction of four separate systems.
There's electrical — a switch, a circuit, and a motor with its own overload protection. There's the sink — a flange, a mounting assembly, and a seal holding a heavy motor to a thin steel basin. There's drainage — a discharge tube, a trap, and the branch line beyond it. And on most installations there's a dishwasher, connected directly into the disposal body.
Which is why "my garbage disposal is broken" is one of the least specific complaints in plumbing. The unit is frequently fine. What has failed is the switch, the mounting, the drain line downstream, or a dishwasher connection that was never set up correctly.
Replacing a working disposal because the line beyond it is blocked is a common and entirely avoidable expense.

The electrical side. Nothing happens at all — no sound, no hum. That's power, not grinding. The tripped internal overload (the reset button underneath), a tripped breaker, a failed wall switch, or a failed motor. The order to check is exactly that, and the first two cost nothing.
The motor and grinding chamber. It hums but doesn't turn, or it runs and stops. A hum means power is reaching the motor and something is preventing rotation — almost always a jam. A unit that runs then cuts out repeatedly is tripping its own overload, which is protection working rather than failure.
The mounting and sink flange. Water appears on top of the sink base or drips from the very top of the unit where it meets the sink. That's the flange seal or the mounting assembly, not the disposal. Common in units that have been in place for years, and in any unit that's been knocked or is hanging on a loosening mount.
The discharge side. The unit runs perfectly but water backs up into the sink, drains slowly, or leaks from the tube on the side. The grinding is fine. The problem is the discharge tube, the trap, or the branch line beyond it — a drain problem wearing a disposal costume.
The dishwasher connection. The dishwasher backs up, drains into the sink, or won't empty. Covered in its own section below, because one specific cause accounts for an enormous share of these calls.
The unit body itself. Water dripping from the bottom of the disposal. This is the one that isn't repairable — a corroded or cracked housing means replacement. Everything above it is fixable.
Ask which of these it is before agreeing to a new unit. Four of the six aren't the appliance.
This isn't boilerplate. Disposals are the appliance most likely to injure a homeowner attempting a repair.

Establishing which before anyone quotes is the difference between a seal and a new appliance. If water is present under the sink and you can't tell where it originates, dry everything thoroughly, run the disposal briefly, and watch where the first drop appears.
One specific fault accounts for a remarkable share of "my new disposal broke my dishwasher" calls.
New disposals ship with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a knockout plug. It's a moulded plug inside the inlet port that must be removed before the dishwasher hose is connected. If it isn't, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain — it will back up, sit full of water, or overflow, and the disposal itself will appear to be at fault.
It's the single most common installation error on this appliance, and it happens whenever a disposal is fitted by someone who doesn't do it regularly.

If your dishwasher started misbehaving after disposal work, say so when you call. It narrows this to one of four things immediately.
Most units don't wear out. They're killed, gradually, by a handful of habits.
Worth repairing: jams, tripped overloads, switch faults, flange and mounting leaks, discharge and dishwasher connection leaks, splash guard replacement, and blockages downstream. All of these are inexpensive relative to a new unit.
Replacement territory: leaking from the bottom of the housing — corrosion or a crack, not repairable. A motor that trips constantly with no jam present. A unit that's noticeably slower or noisier over time with no obstruction, indicating worn bearings. A burning smell, which means the motor is failing. An older unit where the repair cost approaches replacement, particularly where the mounting assembly also needs work. Persistent under-capacity — a small unit in a household that cooks heavily was undersized from the start, and that isn't a fault to repair.
One practical note when replacing: if the new unit shares the same mounting standard as the old one, installation is straightforward. If not, the sink flange assembly changes too, which adds work. Worth establishing before choosing a model.

Grease is the dominant issue, and grease interceptor servicing matters far more than the disposal itself. A disposal grinding food waste into a line with an under-serviced interceptor is a blockage on a schedule.
Local rules vary. Some jurisdictions restrict or prohibit food waste disposals in commercial kitchens, or attach requirements to their use. Worth confirming before installing rather than after.
Downtime is the real cost. A blocked kitchen line during service is a closure with health inspection consequences attached, which is why scheduled maintenance outperforms reactive callouts in almost every commercial kitchen.

That's electrical rather than mechanical. Try the reset button on the underside first, then the breaker, then the wall switch. Those three account for most totally dead units.
It's jammed. Isolate the power at the breaker, then free the rotation using the hex wrench in the socket underneath, or a broom handle levered against an impeller from above. Never use your hand.
No — not even with the switch off. Use tongs or pliers with the power isolated at the breaker.
Then the grinding is working and the problem is downstream — the discharge tube, the trap, or the branch line. Replacing the disposal won't change anything.
Very likely the knockout plug. New disposals ship with the dishwasher inlet sealed, and it must be removed before the hose is connected. It's the most common installation error on this appliance.
Dry everything, run it briefly, and watch for the first drop. Top means the flange or mounting; the sides mean a connection; the bottom means the housing has failed and the unit needs replacing.
Either something is jamming it, it's being overloaded by too much waste at once, or the motor is failing. Repeated resetting addresses none of the three.
Cold, always. Cold keeps fats solid so they're ground and carried out. Hot melts them, and they re-solidify further along the pipe.
No. It sits in the chamber and trap, it's caustic around metal components in a confined space, and it's a hazard for whoever opens that trap next.
Grease, fibrous vegetables, potato peelings, pasta and rice in volume, coffee grounds, bones, fruit pits, shells, and anything that isn't food.
Almost always build-up in the chamber and under the splash guard rather than a fault. Ice and cold water do more than citrus, though citrus helps afterward.
Years, with reasonable use. What shortens it is grease, hard objects, and running it without enough cold water — not age alone.
Repair jams, resets, switches, and connection leaks. Replace for a housing leaking from the bottom, constant tripping with no jam, a burning smell, or a unit that has become slow and noisy from worn bearings.
